Chemical Name: Protriptyline HCI Brand Name: Vivactil Manufacturer: Merck and Company Description: Anti-depressant of unknown mechanism. Indication and Use: Vivactil is indicated for the treatment of depression in patients who are under close medical supervision. Its activating properties make it particularly suitable for withdrawn and anergic patients. Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Vivactil should not be given concomitantly with a monamine oxidase inhibiting compound. Vivactil may block the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine or similarly acting compounds. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures, and because of its autonomic activity, in patients with tendency to urinary retention, or increased intraocular tension. Vivactil should be used with caution in elderly patients and patients with cardiovascular problems. Do not use with alcohol. Do not use during pregnancy. Adverse Reactions: Vivactil is more likely to aggravate agitation and anxiety and produce cardiovascular reactions such as increased heart rate and hypotension. Possible side effects may include palpitation, insomnia, panic, nightmares, headache, weakness, fatigue, dry mouth, edema, abdominal cramps, and black tongue. Abrupt withdrawal of long term therapy may cause nausea, headache, and malaise (this does not indicate addiction). Dosing Range: Dosing should be initiated at a low level and increased gradually according to response and tolerance. Adult dosage is 15-40 mg a day divided into 3 or 4 doses. Doses above 60 mg/day are not recommended. Back |
