Description:            A benzodiazepine with depressant effects on the central nervous system to produce calming effects.

Indications and Use:  Indicated for the management of anxiety disorders, for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety, as adjunctive therapy in the management of partial seizures and symptomatic relief of acute alcohol withdrawal.

Contraindications, Warnings and Precautions:  Contraindicated in patients with acute narrow angle glaucoma.  Not recommended for use in depressive neuroses or in psychotic reactions.  Caution should be used when driving or in hazardous occupations that requiring mental alertness. An increased risk of congenital malformation in the first trimester of pregnancy has been suggested in several studies of this type of drug. Use cautiously in the elderly.  Do not use with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants.  Use cautiously in depressed patients.  As with other benzodiazepines, caution must be used in persons who are considered to have a psychological potential for drug dependence. Withdrawal symptoms have occurred following abrupt discontinuation of Tranxene.

Adverse Reactions:  Possible common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, gastrointestinal complaints, nervousness, dry mouth, headache, blurred vision and mental confusion. Less common side effects may include insomnia, transient skin rashes, fatigue, ataxia, genitourinary complaints, irritability, diplopia, depression, tremor and slurred speech.

Dosing Range:  The dosage should be adjusted gradually to a range of 15 to 60mg daily.
