Chemical Name: Nortriptyline hydrochloride Brand Name: Pamelor (available in generic) Manufacturer: (of Pamelor) Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Description: Pamelor is an antidepressant in the tricyclic class. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown. Indications and Uses: Nortriptyline is indicated for the treatment of depression. Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Nortriptyline should not be used with MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) or in patients with a known hypersensitivity. It is contraindicated during the acute recovery period of a heart attack. It should be used with extreme caution in patients with known cardiovascular disease, patients with glaucoma, and patients with a history of urinary retention. It may lower the seizure threshold. It must be used with caution in hyperthyroid patients or in those receiving thyroid medication. It should not be used with alcohol. Safety for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers has not been established. It has not been approved for use in children. Adverse Reactions: Possible common side effects are drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and nausea. It may also cause dizziness, agitation, urinary retention, tremors, blurred vision, photosensitivity, decreased libido, and weight gain. Stopping Nortriptyline abruptly after prolonged use may cause withdrawal (rebound) symptoms - nausea, headache, and malaise. Dosing Range: The usual adult dosage is 25 mg three to four times a day or all at bedtime. With doses above 100 mg per day, plasma (blood) levels should be monitored. Doses above 150 mg per day are not recommended. |
