Chemical Name: Molindone hydrochloride Brand Name: Moban (not available in generic) Manufacturer: Gate Pharmaceuticals Description: Moban exerts its effect on the ascending reticular activation system. Indications and Use: Moban is indicated for the management of the manifestations of psychotic disorders. Moban can also reduce spontaneous locomotion and aggressiveness, and suppress the conditioned response and antagonism of the bizarre stereotyped behavior and hyperactivity induced by amphetamines. Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Moban may cause tardive dyskinesia, which is a potentially irreversible, involuntary syndrome that causes dyskinetic movements. Tardive dyskinesia is most prevalent in the elderly, particularly females. The potentially fatal symptom of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) has been reported in association with anti-psychotic drugs. Signs of NMS include muscle rigidity, altered mental status, high fever, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and cardiac dysrhythmia. Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medication. Adverse Reactions: Possible common side effects include extrapyramidal symptoms, sedation, tardive dyskinesia, orthostatic hypotension, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention and mild photosensitivity. Less common side effects include tachycardia, menstrual irregularities, inhibited ejaculation, abnormal liver function tests. Dosing Range: The typical starting dose is 50 - 75mg per day. Some individuals may require up to 225mg per day. |
