Description: Fluvoxamine is a member of the class SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) which refers to its mechanism of action. It appears to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin at the nerve endings, thereby increasing its concentration in the brain. 

Indications and Uses: Fluvoxamine is indicated for the treatment of obsessions and compulsions in patients diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Although not yet approved in this country to treat depression, it is marketed as an antidepressant in other countries.

Contraindications, Warnings and Precautions: Fluvoxamine may not be given to patients on astemizole or terfenadine or with MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors). It should be used with caution with the benzodiazepines alprazolam, midazolam, and triazolam. It should not be used at all with diazepam. Care should be taken when co-administered with theophyllin and warfarin. Fluvoxamine can activate mania in susceptible patients. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizure disorder. Alcohol should be avoided with Fluvoxamine. Safety for use in pregnancy has not been established. Fluvoxamine is secreted in breast milk, and, therefore, should be avoided in nursing mothers. Safety and effectiveness for use in children has not been established.

Adverse Reactions: Possible common side effects are nausea and upset stomach. Some patients experience drowsiness while others experience insomnia. Other possible side effects are dizziness, shaking, nervousness, weakness, decreased libido or orgasm, diarrhea, dry mouth, and constipation.

Overdosage: Patient should be treated in an emergency room. Treatment usually involves gastric lavage as well as symptomatic treatment.

Dosing Range: The recommended starting dose is 50 mg at bedtime. The dosing range is 100 mg to 300 mg per day. Doses over 100 mg per day should be given in two divided doses.
