Chemical Name: Clonazepam

Brand Name: Klonopin (available in generic)

Manufacturer: Roche Laboratories

Description: Klonopin has several pharmacologic properties which are characteristic of the benzodiazapine class of drugs.

Indications and Use: FDA approved for Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and atypical absence seizures, akinetic and myoclonic seizures. Also used for patients with panic and/or anxiety disorders.

Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Klonopin causes central nervous system (CNS) depression; therefore, alcohol, narcotics, barbituates, non-barbituate hypnotics, anti-anxiety agents, phenothiazines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants should be avoided. Klonopin may increase the incidence or precipitate the onset of grand mal seizures. Abrupt withdrawal should be avoided. Klonopin may produce psychological and physical dependence. Withdrawal symptoms are similar to those of alcohol or barbituate withdrawal: convulsions, psychosis, hallucinations, tremors, and abdominal cramps. Addiction-prone individuals (drug addicts or alcoholics) should either avoid this medication or be under close, careful surveillance when taking this drug.

Adverse Reactions: Common side effects include drowsiness, ataxia, increased salivation, confusion, constipation, and a change in appetite.

Dosing Range:  Typically, initial doses are 0.5mg to 2.0mg per day and are increased gradually if necessary, depending on the symptoms.  Maximum recommended dosage is 20mg per day.
