Chemical Name: Quazepam Brand Name: Doral Manufacturer: Schering Corporation Description: A trifluoroethylbenzodiazepine hypnotic whose specific mechanism of action is unknown. Indications and Use: Indicated for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty in falling asleep, frequent nocturnal awakenings, and/or early morning awakenings. Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Doral is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this drug or other benzodiazepines, and in patients with established or suspected sleep apnea. Doral should not be used during pregnancy. Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants with use of this drug. Use caution if engaging in hazardous occupations requiring mental alertness. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported after the abrupt discontinuation of benzodiazepines. Addiction prone patients should be watched carefully because of the predisposition to habituation and dependence. Adverse Reactions: Possible common side effects include drowsiness and headache. Dosing Range: In adults, 15 mg until individual responses are determined. In some patients, the dose may be then reduced to 7.5 mg. Because elderly or debilitated patients may be more sensitive to benzodiazepines, attempts to reduce the nightly dosage after the first one or two nights of therapy is suggested. |
