Chemical Name: Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Trade Name: Dexedrine Manufacturer: SmithKline Beecham Description: Mechanism of action is unknown. Probably promotes nerve impulse transmission by releasing stored norepinephrine from nerve terminals in the brain. Indication: Dexedrine is indicated for the treatment of Narcolepsy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Amphetamines have a high potential for abuse. Caution should be used when there is a possibility of non-therapeutic use and/or distribution to others. Contraindicated in patients with advanced arteriosclerosis, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, history of drug abuse, during or within 14 days of administration of MAO inhibitors. Adverse Reactions: Possible side effects may include restlessness, insomnia, increased heart rate, and palpitations. Less common side effects may include headache, overstimulation, hypertension, dry mouth, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and weight loss.
