Chemical Name: Trazodone hydrochloride Brand Name: Desyrel Manufacturer: Geneva Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Description: Mechanism of action is unknown, although it inhibits serotonin uptake in the brain. Desyrel is chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other known antidepressant agents. Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions: Desyrel is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Desyrel. Alcohol should be avoided with Desyrel. Desyrel may increase hypotensive effects of antihypertensives. Avoid concomitant use with central nervous system depressants. Use with MAO inhibitors is unknown, use together with extreme caution. Trazodone has been associated with the occurrence of priapism. Patients with prolonged or inappropriate penile erection should immediately discontinue the drug and consult a physician. Adverse Reactions: Possible common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, and sweating. Dosing Range: Initial adult dose may be 150 mg daily divided into two doses. Maximum dose should not exceed 400 mg per day. May be increased by 50 mg daily for three to four days.
