A
benzodiazepine derivative. Exact mechanism of action is unknown. Indications
and Use: Indicated
for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the
symptoms of anxiety. Also indicated
for anxiety associated with depression or anxiety associated with alcohol
withdrawal. Contraindications,
Warnings and Precautions:
Contraindicated
in psychotic persons. Caution
should be used when driving or in hazardous occupations that require complete
mental alertness. An increased risk of congenital malformation in the first
trimester of pregnancy has been suggested in several studies of this type of
drug. Do not use with alcohol.
Use cautiously with other central nervous system depressants.
As with other benzodiazepines, caution must be used in persons known to
be addiction-prone or persons whose history suggests likelihood they might
increase the dose on their own initiative.
Consult a physician before abrupt discontinuation. Adverse
Reactions:
Possible common side effects may include drowsiness or lethargy. Less
common side effects may include dizziness, vertigo, headache, tremor, slurred
speech, edema, nausea, and altered libido. Dosing
Range:
Dosage should be individualized according to reason for use and age of
patient.
