Chemical
Name:
Lorazepam Brand
Name:
Ativan Manufacturer: Wyeth Laboratories, Inc. Description:
A
benzodiazepine that has a tranquilizing action on the central nervous system. Indications
and Use: Indicated
for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the
symptoms of anxiety or anxiety associated with depressive symptoms.
Anxiety or tension associated with the stress of everyday life usually
does not require treatment with an anxiolytic. Contraindications,
Warnings and Precautions:
Contraindicated
in patients with acute narrow angle glaucoma.
Ativan is not recommended for use in patients with a primary depressive
disorder or psychosis. Caution
should be used when driving or operating dangerous machinery.
Use cautiously in the elderly. Do
not use with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants. An increased
risk of congenital malformation in the first trimester of pregnancy has been
suggested in several studies of this type of drug. As with other benzodiazepines,
caution must be used in persons known to be addiction-prone because of the
predisposition of such patients to habituation and dependence. Withdrawal
symptoms, similar in character to those noted with barbiturates and alcohol
(convulsions, tremor, abdominal and muscle cramps, vomiting and sweating), have
occurred following abrupt discontinuation of lorazepam. Adverse
Reactions:
Possible common side effects may include sedation, dizziness, weakness
and unsteadiness. Less common side effects may include disorientation,
depression, nausea, change in appetite, headache, sleep disturbance, agitation,
dermatological symptoms, eye-function disturbance, together with autonomic
manifestations. Dosing
Range:
For optimal results, the dose, frequency and duration of therapy should
be individualized according to patients age and response. |
