Chemical Name:     Donepezil HCL

 Brand Name:            Aricept

 Manufacturer:          Pfizer Inc.

 Description: A reversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.  Aricept is postulated to enhance cholinergic function by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine and possibly improve cognitive function temporarily persons with Alzheimer’s Disease.

 Indications and Use:  For treatment of mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.

 Contraindications, Warnings and Precautions:  May exaggerate muscle relaxation during anesthesia.  May be expected to increase gastric acid secretion, so persons should be monitored for GI bleeding, especially those at risk for developing ulcers.

 Adverse Reactions:  Most possible common side effects may include headache, insomnia, nausea, and diarrhea.  Less common side effects may include dizziness, depression, tremor, irritability, blurred vision and fatigue.

 Dosing Range:  The usual dose is 5 to 10mg per day.
