Chemical Name:   Biperiden Hydrochloride

Brand Name:  Akineton

Manufacture:  Knoll Laboratories

Description:  Mechanism of action unknown.  Blocks central cholinergic receptors, helping to balance cholinergic activity in the basal ganglia.

Indications and Use:  Akineton is used to treat drug induced extrapyramidal disorders and Parkinsonism.

Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions:  Contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, bowel obstruction, megacolon, or hypersensitivity to drug.  Avoid concomitant use with amantadine, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants to avoid excessive central nervous system effects.  Alcohol should be avoided with this medication.  To avoid adverse gastrointestinal effects this medication should be taken with or after meals.

Adverse Reactions:  Possible common side effects are dry mouth and constipation.

Dosing Range:  In adults 2 mg once daily, twice daily, or three times daily depending on severity.  Usual dosage is 2 mg daily, do not exceed 8 mg daily.
